Art II- week of September 23rd

Art II students continued the development of their Value Object Composition.

Students are carefully observing each of the 3 viewpoints of their object under a strong light-source, in order to develop a full range of value.

Value development is essential to creating the formtexture and surface quality of the object. It additionally plays an important role is creating contrast and emphasis, important elements involved in creating a strong focal point.

Art I- week of September 23rd

ART I students have begun to develop skills and techniques related to observational drawing.
To draw realistically, one must be able to observe critically.

One exercise employed to develop observation skills and hand-eye coordination is the Blind Contour Drawing. click here to read an explanation of this exercise

All students selected an object to carefully observation and sketch from various viewpoints (at least 3 required).

The most interesting viewpoint discovered through the sketching process, will become the basis of a final Contour line drawing.

Art II- week of September 16th

Art II students have begun the development of their Value Object Composition.

After sketching 5 different viewpoints, each student created 3 different composition sketches.

The most effective composition sketch will be translated to the final drawing.

Students will carefully observe each viewpoint under a strong light-source and develop a full range of value  on each viewpoint in order to create the formtexture and surface quality of the object.

Art I- week of September 16th

ART I students continued to develop the skills and knowledge related to rendering dimensional form within their drawings through the careful observation and creation of value.

Students created an 9-step value scale, focusing on gradual transitions from one tone to the next, and smooth application of tones through pencil pressure, use of multiple grades of drawing pencils (4H, HB & 6B) and various pencil stroke techniques.

This full-range of tones was applied to their drawings of the 4 Basic Forms (sphere, cone, cylinder, and cube). These forms were set up at each table and a desk lamp was utilized as the single, dramatic light source in order to make the presence of light and tonal range more obvious.

Students will apply this learning to the creation of a full-range value drawing of a close-up area of the object they have selected in class.

Art II- week of September 9th

ART II students are in the process of creating a sketchquote. The "quote" can be any line of text; a line from a movie, lyrics from a song, inspirational quote, passage of text from a book or lines of poetry.

Students have been creatively planning how to visually depict the meaning of their chosen quote using imagery, typography and composition. Students may use any style of imagery (realistic, stylized, symbolized, abstract), any style of hand-drawn typography and any drawing/painting media that is deemed the most effective for representing his/her idea.

The final artwork will be completed next week.

Art I- week of September 3rd

All ART I students started the course by creating a self-portrait drawing based on careful observation of their reflection in a mirror.

This drawing serves as a baseline assessment; evidence of each student's knowledge and skills related to observation and various drawing techniques at the beginning of the course (Before any instruction has been implemented).

Later in the course, students will again create a self-portrait drawing, which should display clear evidence of their improvements as a result of all the activities, projects and practice they have participated in.
